Maddern Carries Hawks Past Elms

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Becker College Hawks' hot bats cruised
past the Elms College Blazers in game two of the Inaugural New
England Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship Playoffs 10-1
on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Errick Maddern (West Haven, Conn.),
the Hawks ace (6-3), shut down the Blazers offense as he pitched a
complete game striking out 10 and only allowed one run.
Freshman Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass.) went 5-for-5 with three runs
scored and two stolen bases. Every Becker (15-14-1) batter had at
least one hit. Senior Dan Briand (Northbridge, Mass.) crushed a
solo home run in the fifth batting 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI
and two runs scored.
Senior Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, Mass.) went 2-for-4 for Elms (16-18)
while sophomore Albert Betances (Haverhill, Mass.) knocked a triple
and had EC's lone RBI.
Sophomore Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, Mass.) fell to 4-3 on the year
as he took the loss for the Blazers. Wood struck out three, walked
three, and gave up six runs in six innings of work.
Becker plays the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers (12-24) at
1:00 p.m. while Elms will play the Mitchell College Mariners
(10-20) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. at Epstein Field.
