Baseball Drops Heartbreaker To John Carroll


Port Charlotte, Fla.- John Carroll defeated Becker College 10-9 in 12 innings.

 In the 2nd inning, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Frank Vaccaro RBI single. Becker added to their lead two innings later when Weston Meehan drove a double into left field, scoring Jim Ceglarek.

John Carroll answered back in the bottom of the 4th with 3 runs.  The Blue Streaks loaded the bases with no outs before Mike Carbo earned walked, making the score 2-1. Michael Krainz then grounded into a double; which scored Matthew Pangallo with the tying run. John Carroll took the lead on a Tim O'brein RBI single.

The Hawks regained the lead in the next half inning.  Joe Corey and Dan Briand led off the inning with singles. Ryan Sczerbinski reached base when the John Carroll pitcher threw the ball away, allowing Joe Corey to score from 2nd base.  Weston Meehan drove in Dan Briand with an RBI double, putting the Hawks up 5-3. The Hawks added another run when Frank Vaccaro doubled into right field.

In the 6th inning, the Blue Streak battled back again. With two outs, Russell Toth earned a bases loaded walked, making the score 6-4. Tom Hickey tied the game when he singled in two more runs.

Becker answered with 2 runs in the top of the 7th. After Jim Ceglarek singled, Weston Meehan hit his first collegiate homerun, putting the Hawks up 8-6.

The Hawks relinquished the lead for the 3rd time in the bottom of the 7th.  After a costly error, Mike Carno tripled down the right field line, putting the Blue Streak within one.  Aaron Sayad then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the tying run to score from 3rd.

The two teams were held scoreless for the next 4 innings. Becker took the lead in the top of the 12th inning when Dan Briand scored from 3rd on a wild pitch.

John Carroll scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 12th, as Becker fell to 0-2 on the year.  Aaron Sayad allowed just 1 earned run over 6.1innings pitched. Keith Kandel was the tough luck loser, as he pitched 4.2 innings of solid relief.

Corey Tilden pitched one inning to earn the win for John Carroll.

In game two of the double header, Becker was held to just 3 hits, as John Carroll ousted the Hawks 9-1. The Hawks are now 0-3 on the season.
