Baseball Squeezes Past Newbury

Becker College baseball swept conference foe Newbury College 7-2 and 5-4 in their final home game of the season for the Nighthawks, Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Nighthawks fall to 2-20 (0-6 NECC) while the Hawks improve to 10-7-1 (5-1 NECC).

Sophomore Erick Maddern (West Haven, CT/St. Thomas More) earned his fourth victory of the season with three-hit, 10 strikeout performance against the Nighthawks in the first game.  Becker jumped out in front with a three-run second. Senior Josue Lopez (Manchester, CT/Manchester) led off the inning with a double, followed by a walk to senior Frank Vaccaro (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury). Freshman Weston Meehan (Thomson, GA/Thomson) drove in Lopez with a one-out double and two batters later Jairo Valdez (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) joined in on the action with a two-run single, plating Vaccaro and Meehan.

That is the way the game stood until the top of the sixth when Becker tacked on an additional four runs. Meehan led off the inning with a walk followed by back-to-back singles by senior Geoff Sinnott, Jr. (Coventry, RI/Coventry) and sophomore Keith Kandel (Fresno, CA/Edison), before Valdez doubled home Meehan. Two batters later junior Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) lined a single to center to plate Sinnott and Kandel.

In the second game of the afternoon, Becker College came away with the 5-4 victory after a seventh inning squeeze play pushed across the winning run. With one out in the inning, Valdez lined a triple to right field. Freshman Joe Corey (Billerica, MA/Billerica) dropped down a bunt in front the dish, to plate Valdez.

Newbury freshman Alex Chetelat (Farmington, CT/Farmington) retired the first eight batters of the Hawk line-up, five of them by way of the strike out before issuing a walk to Kandel in the top of the third. Chetelat pitched a complete game allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight. He also played well at the plate, going 3-for-6 on the day with a double and a run scored. Freshman Joseph Herer (Needham, MA/Needham) was also productive for the Nighthawks going 3-for-7 on the afternoon.
