Field Hockey Shutout by WPI

Worcester, MA --- Jackie McDonough (Winchester, MA), Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) and Caitlin Kelley (Saratoga Springs, NY) all notched goals to help lift WPI to a 3-0 shutout over visiting Becker in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.  With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-3 while Becker slips to 3-4.

McDonough registered the only goal of the first half when, following a penalty corner in the 10th minute, she took a feed Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA) and blasted a shot from the left wing.  The marker was the first of the season for the sophomore.

Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) added to the Engineer advantage early in the second half when she tipped home a shot off the stick of Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) following a scramble in front of the net.  The goal was Maglione's third of the year and 23rd of her career.

Caitlin Kelley (Saratoga Springs, NY) closed out the scoring with her first career goal.  The unassisted tally came with 5:12 left in the contest.

WPI goalkeepers Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) and Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA) combined for the shutout.  Ray played the first 64:12 for the Crimson and Gray and improved to 4-3 on the season.  Becker netminder Ciara Lawrence (Costa Mesa, CA) was outstanding in between the pipes for the Hawks.  The senior recorded 17 saves on the day, including 15 stops in the second half.

Both teams are off until conference road contests on Saturday.  WPI travels to MIT in its NEWMAC opener at 2:30pm while Becker heads to Bay Path for a 11:30am NECC match-up.
