Field Hockey Sneaks Past Daniel Webster


Nashua - Victoria Sirchia's (Goshen Conn.) goal in the 27th minute stood up as the eventual game winner as Becker College nipped host Daniel Webster College 1-0 in an early-season battle for first place in a New England Collegiate Conference field hockey matchup Saturday at Harvey Woods Field.

Sirchia's game winner gave kept propelled the Hawks (4-5, 3-0 NECC) into sole possession of first place and handed the second-year and upstart Eagles their first loss of 2009 as they moved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

The Eagles controlled the tempo through most of the first half with five shots and a decisive edge in penalty corners (12-2) but couldn't convert.

Becker took control in the second, stifling the Eagle attack and limited DWC to no shots in the frame.

Amy Prince (Hope Valley, R.I.) finished with seven saves for the hosts, while Nakita Gosselin (Springfield, Vt.) made three saves for Becker.

The Eagles visit Wheelock in a NECC game Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Becker hosts Worcester State Monday at 3:30 p.m.
