Field Hockey Blanks Wheelock

BOSTON, Mass. - Defense was the name of the game Tuesday night when Becker College traveled to Wheelock College's home turf. It was the Hawks who prevailed 2-0 however, in a battle of the top two teams in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).  Becker remains unbeaten in conference play at 6-0, while Wheelock fell to 3-2, both losses coming at the hands of the Hawks.
The first score came at the 7:18 mark in the first half when Senior Jennifer Ouellette (Merrimack, NH) picked the ball from Wheelock goalie Meredith Race's pads to give Becker the game winning goal. From that point on, the defense of each team took over. The Wildcat defense allowed only five shots in the first half, while Becker shut down Wheelock's offense completely.
"It was a tough loss, but it was a very exciting game," said Wheelock head coach Kyoungho Koh. "Everyone played really well, not to the best of what we know, but they played at a very high level, in particular Chelsey Ballard (Mansfield, Mass.) who played out of her mind on defense tonight."
The insurance goal for Becker came with under ten minutes to play when Ouellette found Kayla Messina (Somerville, Mass.) to give the Hawks the two goal advantage.
Abby Cassell (Bartlett, NH) led Wheelock with two shots on the night, while Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) and Kylie Hefford (Exeter, NH) each had a shot.
Ouellette led the Hawks with three points on the night. Wheelock will next take on Daniel Webster on Saturday in New Hampshire, while Becker faces off against Elms College on Saturday as well.
