SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- January 2, 2009 -- Travis Suber of nearby Longmeadow High School scored 27 points to lead his Becker College men's basketball team to an 80-68 victory over Springfield College in the first round of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic at Springfield College's James Naismith Court in Blake Arena earlier this evening.
With the win, Becker of Leicester, Mass. is now 6-2, while Springfield falls to 6-4. Becker now awaits the winner of game #2 tonight -- Bates vs. Castleton State -- and will play in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 pm. Springfield will play in the consolation game at 3:00 pm against the loser of tonight's second game.
Suber, a 5-10 senior guard from Springfield, Mass., scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half in leading his Hawks to a 43-33 advantage at the intermission. At that point, he was 8-of-12 from the field and 1-for-3 from 3-point range. By game's end, he had scored 27 points, adding 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. He finished 11-of-17 from the field, mostly mid-to-long range jumpers.
Two others scored in double figures for the Hawks. They were sophomore guard DJ Exum (New London, Conn.) with 17 points (and 4 assists), and sophomore center Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, Md.) with 12 points (in just 11 minutes of action).

The Pride cut it to eight (37-29) with 2:14 to go on a lay-up by White. Two free throws by Crean with one second left cut the margin to 10 (43-33) at the half. Crean scored 14 of his 16 points in that first half, but found himself in foul trouble a good part of the evening.
