Brockport downs Becker 3-2 in Rutland Herald Invitational

Rutland, VT - SUNY-Brockport took advantage of its second chance opportunities to take third place in the Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Becker.

The Golden Eagles put 33 shots on Becker goalie Jake Rosenthal, who made 30 saves on the afternoon. Brockport put away two of the rebounds Rosenthal left in front of the net on its way to victory.

Dave McNab put the Golden Eagles on the board 8:06 into the game off a rebound to the far side post. Rick Stanek took a shot from the left side that Rosenthal kicked to the right, but McNab was there to put the puck in the open side of the net. Brockport scored on a 2-on-1 opportunity on the power play to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. With 5:29 left in the first, Mike Gershon sent home a centering pass from the left side by Ray Tremblay five-hole by just getting the blade of his stick on the puck for his sixth goal of the season, tying him with McNab for the team lead.

Brockport jumped to a 3-0 lead five minutes into the second period thanks to another rebound opportunity. Rosenthal again kicked the initial shot by McNab away to the far side, but Sean O'Malley was on the doorstep to knock home his second goal of the season.

The Hawks got on the board six minutes later off a rebound. Chris Miller skated towards the net from the right side and put a shot high on Brockport goalie Josh Roarke, who made 21 stops in the win. Roarke knocked the puck down but it trickled through the crease where Brian Murray put it in to make it a 3-1 game. With 1:10 left in the period, Becker scored the final goal of the game. The Hawks got a 2-on-1 opportunity on the power play. Trevor Peltak skated on Roarke, and then dropped the puck to Kevin Coyne, who shot from the right side. Roarke could not squeeze the puck between his glove hand and body and Becker cut the lead to 3-2.

Becker had its best chance to tie the game up in the third period on a penalty shot. Pat Bellew split two defenders in the neutral zone to be

1-on-1 with Roarke. Bellew was dragged down from behind before he could get the shot off and was awarded a penalty shot. Bellew shot for the top left corner, but Roarke made the save with his blocker.

The Golden Eagles improve to 4-5-1 on the season with the win. Becker falls to 2-6 after the weekend. Becker returns to ECAC Northeast play with an 8:30 pm face off on Sunday, December 7 at Nichols. Brockport will play host to Fredonia on Friday, December 5 at 7:00 pm in SUNYAC action.
