Ice Hawks Shutout Bears

Marlboro, Mass. - The Becker Hawks defeated the WNEC Golden Bears 3-0 today in ECAC Northeast hockey action at the New England Sports Center. Goaltender Tony Stoehr (DePere, WI) made 30 saves and picked up his first shutout of the season. The win snapped the Hawks two game losing streak. The Hawks improve to 11-13 (9-6 ECAC Northeast), WNEC drops to 2-19-2 (2-11-2 ECAC Northeast).
The Hawks tallied first when freshman forward Robert
Johnson (Fenton, MI) broke up a WNEC pass at center ice
and sent Mike Herbert (Naperville, Ill.) in on a
partial breakaway. Herbert's low and outside shot beat WNEC
goaltender Justin Richard (Somers, CT) at the
15:31 mark of the first period.
Becker doubled their lead in the second period on a Nate Sayer's (Dracut, Mass.) goal at 5:14. Sayer had a nifty shot from the slot on great feed across the middle from Mike Caprio (Valencia, CA). Trevor Peltak (Merrimack, NH) also had an assist.
The duo of Herbert and Johnson rounded out the scoring in the third period. Herbert scored his third goal of the season at the 12:59 mark to put the game out of reach. Stoehr picked up his ninth win of the season.
Golden Bears sophomore goaltender Justin Richards (Somers, CT) had 25 saves in the loss.
The Hawks finish up their regular season next Saturday, February 21, when they travel to Stonehill College for a 2:00pm tilt.
