Ice Hockey Loses In Shootout

Marlborough, Mass- Stonehill College erased a 3-0 deficit in the third period, as the Skyhawks defeated Becker College 4-3 in a shootout at the Becker Icebreaker Tournament.
The Hawks scored a shorthanded goal 3:00 into the game on Jonathan Gould's (Hudson, Mass) first collegiate goal. Becker increased their lead to 2-0, when Ron Paiva (Rehoboth, Mass) ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Stonehill goalie Mike Manna (Framingham, Mass). The Hawks gave themselves what looked to be a comfortable 3-0 advantage, when Senior Jared Kersner (Rockville, MD) scored a power play goal with 1:04 remaining in the first period.
The two teams played a scoreless second period before the Skyhawks soared back in the third. Senior Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn) put Stonehill on the board with a power play goal on assists from Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass) and Chris Rogers (Westford, Mass). Stonehill pulled within striking distance 3:24 later, when Pete Roundy fed Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass) on another power play tally. The Skyhawks completed the third period comeback when the Hawks turned the puck over at their own blue line, allowing George DeMello (Cotuit, Mass) to break free on an unassisted goal.
After playing through a five minute overtime, the two teams made their way into a shootout. Chris Rogers scored on the Skyhawks first shootout attempt. Jared Kersner was stoned by Michael Manna, giving the Skyhawks the early lead in the shootout. Peter Roundy put Stonehill up 2-0 when he backhanded the puck over the outstretched arms of Becker goalie Tony Stoehr (De Pere, Wis). Mark Lotito (Staten Island, NY) kept Becker alive when he snuck one past Manna. Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass) diminished the Hawks hopes when he scored what proved to be the eventual shootout winner. Michael Manna stopped attempts by Jonathan Gould and Branden Parkerhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif) to secure the win.
Manna made 37 saves in the victory, as the Skyhawks improved to 1-0-1 on the season. Tony Stoehr made 33 saves, including four huge saves in overtime. The Hawks fell to 0-1-1 overall. Stonehill will face Plymouth State (1-0) in the Championship game of the Becker Icebreaker Tournament at 5:10pm at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough. Becker will host Suffolk University in the consolation game at 2:10.
