Hawks Pick Up First NECC Win

Leicester, Mass - The Becker College men's soccer team picked up their first New England Collegiate Conference win with a 5-4 decision over Newbury College today in the rain at Alumni Field. The Hawks improve to 4-3-1 (1-1 NECC) while Newbury slips to 1-8 (0-1 NECC) on the season.
Newbury got on the board first when John Mawson (Amherst, MA) intercepted a Becker defensive pass and put one past goalie Aaron Fill (Ladner, BC) at the ten minute mark of the first half.
Becker quickly tied the game up 1-1 just a minute later when Jeff Hurd (Melrose, MA) made a quick pass into the middle that John Gilbert (Sturbridge, MA) drilled into the back of the net.
The Hawks broke the game open with goals just 15 seconds apart to make it 3-1. On a corner, Hurd centered a pass that Brian Conway (Billerica, MA) converted for his first collegiate goal. Hurd then picked up a goal of his own when he put back a shot that had rebounded off the post. Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, MA) rounded out the first half with a header to the left corner to make the score 4-1.
The Nighthawks cut the lead in half to 4-2 when Mawson scored on a penalty kick after a Becker penalty in the defensive box. Becker scored their fifth goal when Jared Silva (Freetown, MA) tallied his first goal of the season on a cross from DeBrito to make it 5-2.
Newbury scored two late goals by Joseph Lawer(Worcester, MA) and Hayato Iwahori (Tokyo, Japan) to make the final 5-4.
The Hawks are back on the road tomorrow when they travel to Maine to take on St. Joseph's at 2:00pm.
