Men's Soccer Tops NECC Preseason Poll

Becker Tops NECC in Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Becker College has been tabbed as the preseason favorite to capture the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer championship, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the NECC's head men's soccer coaches.

Eight of the nine NECC members sponsor men's soccer.

The Becker College Hawks (11-8-1, 4-2 NECC) received four of the eight first-place votes in the 2009 NECC preseason poll with 55 points. The Hawks were the 2008 NECC Inaugural Champions. Third year head coach Taskin Guven returns six players four of which should start in the 2009 campaign.

The Hawks will be lead by 2nd team All NECC senior goalkeeper Aaron Fill (Delta, B.C.) and senior midfielder Snjezan Telebak (Chicago, Ill.).

Daniel Webster College received 54 points for the second-place spot grabbing three first-place votes.  Mitchell College came in third with 48 points and one first-place vote. The Mitchell Mariner's went undefeated 6-0 in 2008 regular season conference play.  Lesley University received fourth place with 46 points.

 

Newbury College, Elms College and Southern Vermont College were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Newbury with 27 points, Elms with 24 points and Southern Vermont with 22 points awarded. Newcomer Wheelock College rounded out the voting with 12 points. The Wheelock Wildcats begin their inaugural season this year.

Teams received eight points for every first place vote received, seven points for second place votes, six points for third place votes, down to one point for a last place vote. First place votes are shown in parentheses.
