Hawks Trick Mountaineers


 Leicester, Mass - Freshman Alexandra Fernandes  (Tucson, AZ) and junior captain Catherine Millette(Columbia, CT) combined for six goals and two hat tricks as the Lady Hawks defeated the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 8-0 today at Becker College Alumni Field. The win for the Hawks is their first in the New England Collegiate Conference. Becker's record improves to 2-7 (1-2 NECC) and SVC remains winless at 0-8 (0-3 NECC).

Millette got the Hawks on the scoreboard early with two quick goals in the first ten minutes. Alena Phongsa (Putnam, CT) set up goal one when she threaded the needle to Millette who scored top left corner from the top of the penalty box.  Goal number two was off a corner kick from Ashley deFigueiredo (Dartmouth, MA). The trick was completed early in the second half on the prettiest goal of the game a beautiful cross from Phongsa and headed in by Millette.

Fernandes got on the board late in the first half on a break-a-way for her third goal of the season. She then completed her hat trick on back-to-back unassisted goals at the 60th and 63rd minute of the game.

Caitlin North (Columbia, CT) scored a first half goal and Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, MA) scored her first collegiate goal to finish out the scoring.

Tibbetts and Phongsa shared in the shutout with Tibbetts making two saves. It was the first shutout for the soccer team.

Jillian Newdecker (Johnsonville, NY) kept the Mountaineers in the game making 16 saves. She made several point blank saves.

The Lady Hawks travel to Mount Ida College on October 2nd to take on the Mustangs at 3:30pm.
