Women's Soccer Loses 2-1 To Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's soccer team rallied back from a 1-0 second-half deficit to secure a 2-1 victory over Becker College on Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell (4-8-0 overall, 4-1-0 NECC) notched its third straight win in conference play by scoring twice in the final 30 minutes of the contest. Sophomore Leslie Briggs (Dighton, Mass.) tied the game with a goal in the 65th minute and classmate Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) netted the go-ahead tally in the 77th minute to put the Mariners on top.

After a scoreless first half, Becker (8-6-0 overall, 3-2-0 NECC) scored just 70 seconds into the second stanza. Catherine Millette (Columbia, Conn.) found the back of the net off a feed from Felicia Zalik (Oxford, Conn.) to put the Hawks up 1-0. The goal was Millette's fifth of the season.

Becker clung to the lead for nearly 20 minutes before Briggs tied it up with her fourth goal of the season. She took a ball away from a Becker defender on the left side and cut back before striking a left-footed shot into the side netting inside the far post.

The Mariners took the lead just over 11 minutes later, with junior Paige Ehnot (West Hartford, Conn.) connecting with Hoxie for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Ehnot won a ball in traffic 10 yards in front of the Becker goal and slipped a pass to her left, where Hoxie was waiting to bury a shot into the right corner. Hoxie has now scored in each of the last four games.

Mitchell made the margin stand the rest of the way. Sophomore Brittany O'Neil (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who played the second half in goal, made two saves in the win. Classmate Rachel Cunningham (New Hartford, Conn.) also made a pair of stops and didn't allow a goal in 45 minute of work. Becker goalkeeper Samantha Sousa (Pawtucket, R.I.) made 12 saves and played the entire game.
