Bay Path Takes Inaugural New England Collegiate Conference Womens Tennis Championship Title
ATTLEBORO, Mass.-The Wildcats of Bay Path grabbed the first-ever New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's tennis championship title for the 2008 season. The Wildcats (13-2 overall) claimed the top spot after posting a perfect 6-0 NECC record in conference play.
The Wildcats are led by fifth year Head Coach Steve Morneau. Senior and junior co-captains Raquel Babeu (North Adams, Mass.) and Julia Bendzin (Poestenkill, N.Y.) have led the way all season for the maroon and white net women. Along with Babeu and Bendzin, junior Cristina Ruiz (Waterbury, Conn.) and freshman Sarah Costa (Tiverton, R.I.) produced perfect 6-0 records in conference competition.
The Becker Hawks (10-5, 4-2), the NECC pre-season favorite, finished the conference season as the 2008 NECC women's tennis runners-up. At the helm for the Hawks was first year head coach David Bostick. Becker's captain senior Allison Flynn (Wilmington, Mass.) finished 3-2 in #1 singles conference action. Freshman Shauna McNally (Shrewsbury, Mass.) completed her NECC record undefeated going 6-0 across two separate positions.
Becker's two losses came at the hands of Bay Path on September 17th (5-4) and most recently on October 15th (6-3). The Nighthawks of Newbury (5-10 overall) finished third in the NECC with a 2-4 record, defeating the Mitchell Mariners twice in their 2008 campaign. The Nighthawks two conference victories came on September 22nd (9-0) and October 4th (7-2).
Rounding out the year were the Mariners (2-10, 0-6) finishing in fourth place in the New England Collegiate Conference.
