LEICESTER, Mass. – The Becker College baseball team has been slotted sixth in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball tournament, after completing the regular season on Sunday (Apr. 28) at 13-24 overall and 7-9 in league play under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Kehew.
Senior outfielder Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I.) finished the regular season with a team-high .380 batting average with 49 hits, while posting 25 runs, 10 doubles, three triples, one homer and 18 RBI.
Sophomore shortstop Coby Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) finished the regular season with a team-best .473 on-base percentage and led the team with seven stolen bases. He batted .342 in the regular season with 28 runs, 40 hits, seven doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and led the team with 25 walks.
Sophomore third baseman Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.) led the team in RBI with 34 and hit a team-best 16 doubles. Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.) was also a threat on offense, collecting 31 hits – nine of which were doubles, one was a triple and led the team with five home runs. He was second-best on the team with 27 RBI.
Senior first baseman and pitcher, Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.) was strong offensively and defensively for the Hawks. He batted .361 with a .421 on-base percentage while totaling 22 runs, 39 hits, 11 doubles, three home runs, and a third-best on the team 23 RBI. On the mound, Ventres posted a 4.82 regular season ERA in 46.2 innings pitched. He posted a 3-3 overall record with two saves (2-2 record, two saves in conference play), and struck out 31 batters at the dish.
Rookie Tevon Johnson (New Bedford, Mass.) was a pleasant addition to the Hawks pitching staff this season, as he had a team-low 4.76 ERA and struck out 38 batters in his 45.1 innings pitched. He had an overall record of 2-3 (1-1 in conference play).
The tournament will begin on Tuesday (Apr. 30) with the No. 3 and 4 teams hosting the No. 6 and 5 seeds, respectively, with a single-elimination round. The tournament will then go to a double-elimination format, starting on Thursday (May 2) when the No. 1 and 2 seeds will host the winners of the first round games. The remainder of the tournament will be at the highest seed (Mitchell) Saturday and Sunday (May 4-5).
