Leicester, Mass. - Becker College junior Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD) hit a jumper from inside the paint at 3:56 of the first half to score his 1,000th point as the Hawks defeated the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 83-79 today in an action packed New England Collegiate Conference game at Alumni Gymnasium. Also reaching the 1,000 point milestone was Southern Vermont senior forward Joe Karnik (Castleton, NY).
The Hawks (5-7, 1-0 NECC) never trailed in the game and had a 41-30 lead at halftime. The Hawks were led by Jacobs who had 11 points in the half. Off the bench Markus Wright (New Haven, Conn.) had 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field and 5 rebounds. Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass.) and Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) each chipped in 6 points. Junior guard Lance Spratling (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the Mountaineers (4-6, 1-1 NECC) with 14 points. Southern Vermont out rebounded the Hawks 22-18.
Becker continued their dominance in the second half building their lead to 18 points and a 55-37 lead before Southern Vermont went on a 13-3 run to cut the game to 58-50 with twelve minutes to play. Mountaineers' forward Ben Naaktgeboren (Cambridge, NY) hit a layup with 6:48 on the clock to cut the lead to 6 points at 69-63. With 12 seconds remaining Spratling hit two free throws to make it an 82-79 game. Becker's Wright went to the line with 10 seconds left and hit one to seal the victory.
Becker's top playmakers were Jacobs who finished with 25 points and 5 rebounds and Wright who had a double double on the night with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Leggett also poured in 15 points. The Hawks had 12 steals.
Southern Vermont was led by Spratling who had a game high 34 points and 8 rebounds, Karnick who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Naaktgeboren who had 12 points. Southern Vermont out rebounded the Hawks 44-41.
Becker travels to Wheelock College on Tuesday January 12th for a 5:00pm NECC match-up.
