Men's Basketball’s heroics not enough against Southern Vermont

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's basketball team lost 79-74 to visiting Southern Vermont College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Leicester Gymnasium on the Becker campus in Leicester.

• Senior guard Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass. / St. John's) led Becker with 29 points and four assists. The senior team captain shot 6-of-14 from behind the arc.
• Junior forward Antonio White Jr. (Middletown, Conn. / Middletown) dominated inside with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, all while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
• Sophomore guard Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn. / Universal Audenried) filled the stat line with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
• Sophomore forward Mateus Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Pedroso e Oliveira) finished with 12 points and six boards.
• The Hawks outshot the Mountaineers, 47.3 percent to 43.3 percent from the floor, and 56.5 percent to 33.3 percent from behind the arc.

• Senior guard Josh Borders (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Coral Springs Charter School) led Southern Vermont with 24 points.
• Senior forward Andre Hodo (Silver Spring, Md. / Bullis School) came up big with 18 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Mountaineers.
• Senior guard Aaron Murray (Camden, N.J. / Wheaton) was a presence inside with 10 points, eight boards and three blocks.
• Sophomore guard Donnell Frayer Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Landon School) added 10 points.
• The Mountaineer defense force 17 Hawk turnovers, compared to just five for the home team.

• The game was hotly contested throughout, with both teams trading the lead back and forth. Southern Vermont went into halftime clinging to a 29-28 lead.
• Becker came out hot in the second half, going up 46-40 with 14:33 to go for their largest lead of the game. The Mountaineers would rally, however, finally retaking the lead off a jumper from Hodo with 6:17 remaining and the score 59-57. Becker tied it at 64-64 on a steal and layup by Carr, but that was as close as the Hawks would come as the Mountaineers made all four free throws taken in the final six seconds to put the game away.

The Hawks will be back on the court on Wednesday when they head to Dean College for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, play their next game at New England College with the tip-off coming at 6:00 p.m.
