LEICESTER, Mass. ---- Freshman guard Mekhi Chester (East Orange, N.J. / East Orange Campus) of the Becker College men's basketball has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Rookie of the Week for the week ending February 10, 2019.
Chester stepped up this past week, averaging 14.0 points per game with 5.5 rebounds per game over two games. The rookie shot 52.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from behind the arc. Chester's 13 points on Wednesday at Dean and his 15 points on Saturday against NEC were both career highs up to this point.
Chester is the first Hawk to be named an NECC Rookie of the Week for men's basketball since teammate Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn. / Universal Audenried) earned the award for the week ending January 21, 2018. He was likewise named the Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Rookie of the Week for the same period.
The Hawks will be back on the court on Wednesday when they play host to Elms College at 7:00 p.m. Becker will recognize their senior class from this year's team prior to the game as part of Senior Day.
