LEICESTER, Mass. – Salem State University broke through for their first win of the season, spoiling Opening Night at Alumni Field thanks to a pair of goals from freshman Nicholas Ramos (Middleboro, Mass.) as the Vikings defeated the Becker Hawks, 3-0, on Wednesday evening.
Rain delayed the start of the contest for an hour making for some slick conditions on Alumni Field's turf.
The slippery conditions played a role in the Vikings opening goal in the 5th minute. Hawks junior goalie Sam Majewski (Warren, Mass.) came from his net to claim a loose ball, but the ball bounced from his grasp and to the feet of Ramos who made one cut toward the net and buried his first career goal for a 1-0 lead.
Salem State found the net again in the 50th minute coming off a corner. Junior Lucas Amaral (Peabody, Mass.) sent a threating cross to the middle of the Hawks box that bounced kindly for senior Ryan Smith (Shelton, Conn.) and the Vikings captain made no mistake from six yards out, burying his first of the season to give the Vikings a 2-0 edge.
Ramos was at it again in the 60th minute receiving a perfect cross from the left wing from senior Grace Dos Santos (Brockton, Mass.). Ramos from right around the penalty area flicked a right-footed volley over the head of Majewski, providing Salem State a 3-0 cushion.
Vikings sophomore Matthew Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) made one save, earning the win to move to 1-0 this season. Majewski made six saves for the Hawks but falls to 0-2 with the loss.
Becker has an immediate turnaround as they host Rivier University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Alumni Field. The Vikings take a week of rest before welcoming Wentworth on Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
