Hawks Win 1-0 On Senior Night vs. Albertus Magnus

LEICESTER, Mass. – It was a successful night for the Class of 2021 and the Becker Hawks as they took a 1-0 win on Senior Night against Albertus Magnus on Wednesday evening.

Prior to the start of the game, the Hawks celebrated the careers of seniors Leemar Baptista (Brockton, Mass.), Dylan Foran (Busan, South Korea), and Colby Koch (Norfolk, Mass.) for their contributions to the program.

Score: Becker 1 – Albertus Magnus 0

Records: The Becker College Hawks 2-2-1 | The Albertus Magnus College Falcons 0-1-0

After a scoreless first half, the Hawks were first on the board in the 47th minute on the first goal of the season for Baptista, scoring the opening goal on Senior Night.

On the counterattack, Hawks freshman Ryan Baghdassarian (Commack, N.Y.) turned toward the attack near midfield and slid a pass behind the Falcons back line in the area of Baptista. A defensive mistake allowed Baptista to break in toward goal alone.

From the right side of the penalty area, Baptista fired a right-footed shot past Falcons sophomore goalie Jared Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) and into the left-side goal netting to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The lead would hold despite numerous opportunities for the Falcons to tie the game, including a header by freshman Denis Blandon (Meriden, Conn.) that tested Hawks freshman goalie Luke Speers (Collegeville, Pa.), but his save from close range kept the Hawks lead intact.

The final chance for Albertus Magnus came in the 87th minute on a free kick from the right-wing. The cross into the box found the head of sophomore Connor Steer (Bridgeport, Conn.) but his attempt sailed over the crossbar as the Hawks held on for the 1-0 win.

  • The goal for Baptista is his first since the 2019 season. Baghdassarian earned his first assist of the year with the helper on the lone goal.
  • Speers made six saves on the night and improves to 2-2-1 with his second consecutive shutout win.

  • Sophomores Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) and Anthony Barreira (Beacon Falls, Conn.) shared the team-high with two shots on goal each.
  • Brennan played the second half in the Falcons goal, making two saves in his 45 minutes. Sophomore Garfield Robinson (West Haven, Conn.) played the first half and made just one save.

Both sides return to play on April 18 with the Hawks heading to Anna Maria College for a noon kickoff while the Falcons travel to St. Joseph of Conn., also for a 12:00 p.m. match.
