Softball: Veillette, Iacovelli power Hawks past Falcons

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept visiting county rival Fitchburg State University on Friday evening at Russell Field in Leicester, winning game one, 8-3, before pulling away in an abridged game two, 11-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Becker freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) allowed just two earned runs over seven innings, while freshman catcher Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical) provided the offense, crushing a pair of three-run homers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks used small ball to take a 6-0 lead after two innings, sparked by five RBI singles. After an Iacovelli RBI double and a passed ball put Becker ahead 8-4 in the bottom of the third, the Falcons rallied to within one in the top of the fourth. Once again, the Hawks called on Veillette, who picked up the save in one and a third innings of work. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth as darkness descended on Russell Field.

TOP HAWKS
• For the day, Iacovelli went three-for-four at the plate with two home runs, eight RBI, a double, three runs scored and three walks.
• Veillette also performed at the plate, going three-for-four with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
• Sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) continued her hot hitting, finishing with three hits, a double and two RBI.
• Senior first baseman Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) had two hits and three RBI on the day.
• Senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) finished with two hits and two RBI.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Lesley University for an NECC double-header.
