Softball: Murphy powers Hawks past Wildcats

LONGMEADOW, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept both games of their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) double-header at Bay Path University on Saturday at South Campus Field in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, winning game one, 7-4, and then holding off the Wildcats, 6-4, in game two.

The double-header was a rematch of last season's NECC final.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Becker senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) put the Hawks up right out of the gate with a three run homer in the top of the first. Becker led by as much as 7-0 before a late rally by Bay Path came up short. Becker freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) allowed just two earned runs over seven innings of work to pick up the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Veillette put Becker ahead 3-0 in the top of the third with a two RBI single. Senior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) gave up just two earned runs over five innings in picking up the win, while Veillette took the save. RBI base hits late from Iacovelli, senior first baseman Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy), junior infielder Samantha Buzgo (Beacon Falls, Conn. / Woodland Regional) helped put the game away for the Hawks.

TOP HAWKS
• Murphy had a standout day for Becker, going five of six at the plate with one home run, five runs batted in and two walks. The team captain crossed home plate three times over the two games.
• Freshman catcher Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical), last week's NECC Rookie of the Week, had three hits on the day including a home run and two RBI. The rookie has already hit seven home runs for her career.
• Junior third baseman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) went three-for-five with a run scored.
• Sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural), last week's NECC Player of the Week, continued her strong season with two hits, one walk and three runs scored.
• Sophomore second baseman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) posted two hits, two runs and a walk on the day.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the field on Sunday when they play host to Southern Vermont College in a 12:00 p.m. double-header.
