Softball: Ellis, Murphy join 100 hit club as Hawks down Nighthawks

Softball - 100 Hit Club

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept visiting Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference action on Thursday afternoon at Russell Field in Leicester, winning game one, 10-0, before closing it out in game two, 8-2.

During game two, both sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) and senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) reached the illustrious 100 career hit mark, becoming the sixteenth and seventh players in school history to do so.

Newbury was playing as the home team due to re-scheduling.

• Becker jumped out to an early lead in game one, opening the game with a triple, a triple, a double, a double and a home run by freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) to explode to a 5-0 lead. Veillette allowed just four hits and no runs over five innings of work to earn her 11th win of the season.
• In the second game, freshman catcher Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical) smacked a two RBI single to center in the top of the first to put the Hawks ahead 3-0 as Becker never trailed.

• Ellis reached the 100 hit mark in the top of the first in game two, as she beat the throw for an infield single. For the day, Ellis went six-for-eight with two doubles, four runs and an RBI.
• Murphy had her 100th career hit in top of the third of game two, likewise on an infield single. For the day, the senior team captain posted four hits including a home run with five runs-batted in.
• Veillette went 3-for-3 on the day with a home run, a double and two RBI.
• Senior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) picked up the win in game two, allowing just one earned run over seven innings. At the plate, the senior team captain went four-of-seven with a double, three runs scored and one RBI.
• Senior second baseman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central), senior first baseman Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy), junior third baseman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore), freshman outfielder Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) each had RBI base hits on the day.

The Hawks are back on the field on Friday when they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for a
New England College in a NECC double-header between two of the top three teams in the conference. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
