Softball ends season in NECC first round

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team concluded their 2019 season with an 8-7 loss to visiting Newbury College in the opening round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Russell Field in Leicester.

• Becker jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut). On the very next at-bat, two more runs would score when freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) singled to center for an RBI and an errant throw by the defense allowed Murphy to reach home. The Hawks took a 3-0 lead.
• Newbury would answer in the top of the third, when freshman designated player Caroline Mahoney (Easton, Mass. / Oliver Ames) cranked a home run with the bases loaded for a grand slam as the Nighthawks went up 4-3. Four batters later, senior third baseman Alexis Vieira (Pawtucket, R.I. / Saint Raphael) scored from third on an RBI groundout from freshman left fielder Ambur Leczel (Glendora, Calif. / Glendora). The visitors took a 5-3 lead.
• In the bottom of the third, Becker got a run back when sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) launched a solo shot to left field, making the score 5-4.
• In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawk defense came alive. Freshman outfielder Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game. On the very next at-bat, Veillette cranked a two-run homer to center, putting Becker ahead 7-5.
• Down to their last three outs in the top of the seventh, Newbury rallied, beginning with an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman catcher Cameron LeClaire (Clinton, Conn. / The Morgan School) to pull the visitors to within one. On the very next at bat, junior outfielder Averi Johnson (Oregon City, Ore. / Central Catholic) hit a two-run homer to put the Nighthawks up for good, 8-7.
