Softball: Five Hawks named to NECC All-Conference

LEICESTER, Mass. --- Five players from the Becker College softball team were named to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) All-Conference team for the 2019 season as announced by the league on Tuesday.

Senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) and sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) were voted All-NECC First Team for the Hawks.

Murphy, a senior team captain, had a dominant final season for the Hawks, hitting .429 with nine home runs and 40 runs batted in with 14 walks and eight doubles. Murphy's nine homers tied the Becker single-season school record. It was Murphy's second time being named to the NECC All-Conference team. Murphy became the 17th player in school history to reach the 100 career hit mark on April 25th against Newbury College, and she finishes her career second all-time in career home runs with 15.

Ellis, a team captain in just her second season with the program, hit .434 with three home runs, 32 RBI and 14 doubles. Ellis' 56 hits this year were the second-most all-time in a single season in school history. Ellis became the 16th player in school history to reach the 100 career hit mark on April 25th against Newbury College. Ellis is already second in school history for doubles in a career with 34.

Senior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) was voted All-NECC Second Team. The senior team captain went 10-7 with a 4.46 ERA, with her top moment coming in her final start of the season when she picked up the victory over top-seeded Eastern Nazarene College. She also had a .303 batting average with one home run and 14 RBI. Belenchia finishes her career ranked fifth all-time in career wins with 24 and seventh in career ERA with 4.83.

Senior second baseman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and junior third baseman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) were both voted All-NECC Third Team. Columb had a .397 on-base percentage with five doubles and two triples. Niemann hit .377 with a .443 on-base percentage.

Junior infielder Samantha Buzgo (Beacon Falls, Conn. / Woodland Regional) was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
