CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Becker College softball team opened their 2020 season with a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind extra-innings win over Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon at the Spring Games at the Hancock Complex in Clermont, Florida.

March 7, 2020
Hancock Complex, Clermont, Fla.
Game 1: Becker 5, Ursinus 4 (9 innings)
Game 2: Montclair State 16, Becker 0 (5 innings)

  • Becker was down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh and were down to their final out with only one runner on base. That's when senior first baseman Samantha Buzgo (Beacon Falls, Conn. / Woodland Regional) came to the plate and singled up the right side to drive in senior second baseman Kyra Teixeira (Old Lyme, Conn. / Lyme-Old Lyme) for the Hawks' first run of the season. Then freshman pinch-hitter Cassidy Pigott (Brookline, N.H. / Hollis Brookline) picked up her first career hit, giving Becker runners at first and second. After sophomore outfielder Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) walked to load the bases, freshman third baseman Holly Letourneau (Woonsocket, R.I. / Woonsocket) hit an RBI single – her first career hit – to drive in a run to pull the Hawks to within two. That brought junior shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural), a two-time All-New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) selection, to the plate with the bases loaded. Ellis drove a single into center field, scoring Pigott and pulling Becker to within one. With the very next at-bat, sophomore pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) came to the plate and drew a walk with the bases-loaded to tie it up, sending the game into extra innings.
  • After a scoreless eighth inning, Becker came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with junior pinch runner Isabelle Lathrop (Webster, Mass. / Bartlett) at second via the tie-breaker rule. After advancing to third on a groundout, Lathrop scored the walk-off run off a wild pitch thrown to Letourneau as the Becker dugout exploded in celebration.
  • Veillette allowed just two earned runs with three strikeouts over nine innings for the Hawks. She second-year ace opens the season with a 1.56 ERA.
  • Becker later lost the second game of the day to Montclair State, 16-0.

The Hawks are back on the field on Sunday when they play another two games, Plymouth State at 10:00 a.m. and North Park University at 12:15 p.m.
