Harrison, Pacheco leads Women's Hoops past AMCATs in OT thriller

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's basketball team prevailed 64-60 in a thrilling overtime home opener over visiting Anna Maria College on Tuesday evening at the Leicester Gymnasium on the campus of Becker College in Leicester.

FOR THE HAWKS OF BECKER

  • Becker senior guard Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough) led the Hawks with 24 points - including seven in the final minutes of regulation - shooting six-of-six from the free throw line to go along with three rebounds and two steals before fouling out in the overtime period. As of press time, Harrison ranked second in the nation in three-point field goals made this season.
  • Freshman forward Natasha Pacheco (Fairfax, Va. / WT Woodson) continued her dominant rookie season with a 12 points, 15 rebound performance with four assists. With three double-doubles in her first three collegiate games, Pacheco is tied among the nation's best.
  • Senior forward Sarah Ware (Oakham, Mass. / Quabbin Regional) finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals.      
  • Junior guard Jazlyn Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I. / St. Mary Academy Bay View) overcame a slow start to finish with nine points, five assists and two steals.
  • Sophomore guard Riley Berry (Margate, Fla. / Piper) provided a spark off the bench with four points and seven rebounds. Berry had two points and four boards in crunch time during the extra period.
  • Becker was aggressive in the paint, enjoying a 38-16 advantage in free throw attempts.

FOR THE AMCATS OF ANNA MARIA

  • Anna Maria junior forward Amber Wilson (New York, N.Y. / Proctor Acad.) led the AMCATs with 24 points, 11 rebounds four blocks and two steals.
  • Senior guard Sienna Johnson (Brcokton, Mass. / Massasoit CC) finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Junior forward Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, Mass. / Doherty Mem.) pulled down a game-high 15 boards to go along with four assists and a block.
  • Freshman guard Hailey Vergara (Rialto, Calif. / Arroyo Hills) came off the bench to score 10 points with five rebounds.

CRUNCH TIME

  • Down by eight with 4:49 remaining in the fourth, the Hawks clawed their way back, beginning with a three-pointer by Harrison. Then Ware buried two free throws, followed by two more free throws by Harrison with 2:50 left to pull the Hawks to within three. A layup from Harrison pulled Becker to within one. With 30 seconds left and Becker trailing by two, Contreras buried two free throws to tie it at 57-57. Neither team were able to score in the closing seconds and thus the game went into overtime.  
  • In overtime, Becker had shots early on by Harrison, Berry and Pacheco to go up 63-58 with 1:39 to go. Clinging to a three-point lead with eight seconds left, Contreras went to the line and made one-of-two to ice it.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the court on Thursday night when they play host to the Nor'easters of the University of New England in a 7:00 p.m. The AMCATs host the Hornets of Northern Vermont University – Lyndon in their next contest, that coming on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
