LEICESTER, Mass.- The Becker College women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener to Green Mountain College 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Eagles (1-0) got on the board just 29 seconds into the game on a Rachel Aramburu (Meridan, Id.) goal. The Hawks (0-1) tied the game when Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, N.Y.) fed classmate Victoria Belcher (Seekonk, Mass.) for the equalizer. Ruyack went on to tally three unanswered goals to give Becker a 4-1 lead with 18:10 remaining in the first half.
After a Green Mountain timeout, Catie Brewster (Kingston, N.Y.) matched Ruyack with three unanswered goals of her own to tie the game at 4-4. Martha Howe (Sunapee, N.H.) gave the Eagles the lead when she scored on a free-position shot. Howe extended Eagles lead on a pass from Brewster to make the score 6-4. Green Mountain took a 7-4 advantage at halftime after Brianna Alimonti (Revere, Mass.) tickled the twine with 2:45 remaining in the first stanza.
Rachel Welling (Charlestown, N.H.) opened the second half scoring on a feed from Meghan Bealka (Freetown, Mass.) to cut the Hawks deficit to 7-5. Ruyack then scored game back-to-back goals, tying the game at 7-7 with 16:18 remaining in regulation.
The Eagles took advantage of a couple Becker yellow cards as Aramburu found the back of the net twice and Howe added what proved to be the game winner with 4:43 left on the clock to make the score 10-7.
Becker made things interesting when Erika Galdamez (Concord, Calif.) and Welling tallied free-position goals to bring the Hawks within one
Becker suffered the loss despite doubling the Eagles with a 28-14 margin in shots. Becker goalie Arianne Chipman (Hingham, Mass.) suffered the loss after making three saves. Green Mountain freshman Chelsea Wimble (Colchester, Vt.) earned her first collegiate victory with 11 saves.
Becker returns to action on Wednesday, March 2 with a non-conference tilt at Rivier College at 7:00 p.m. Green Mountain will head to Florida to play Wheelock College on Monday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m.
