LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's lacrosse team got their first win of the season on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field in Leicester, prevailing 9-5 over the visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent.
The Hawks of Becker (1-1) scored first with 28:30 to go in the first when junior midfielder Meghan Bealka (Freetown, Mass. / Apponequet Regional) had her second goal of the year to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Less than a minute later, freshman defender Samantha Carter (Boothbay Harbor, Maine / Boothbay Region) found the back of the net for her first career goal, assisted by junior midfielder Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry). Then with 19:21 remaining, freshman midfielder Cassandra Nelson (Exeter, N.H. / Exeter) scored unassisted for her second career goal as the Hawks went up 3-0. Nelson scored again with 9:48 to go, and Becker appeared to be cruising with a four-goal lead.
Back came the Dolphins of CMSV (0-1). With 6:37 remaining, junior midfielder Alicia Forgione (Lawrenceville, NJ / Lawrence) got the visitors on the board for the first time. Two minutes later, freshman midfielder Georgiana Trizano (Yonkers, NY / The Ursuline School) added another goal and the Hawks were clinging to a 4-2 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Becker broke out of its scoring funk when Turner scored her first goal of the season with 23:09 to go in the game. Sophomore attacker Taryn Flebbe (Neptune, N.J. / Neptune) scored for the Hawks two minutes later to put Becker ahead 6-2. After a CMSV goal from Forgione, Becker got one back with 13:40 to go as Bealka scored her second goal of the game, assisted by freshman defender Madison Maloney (Clovis, Calif. / Mountain Vista). Turner scored her second goal of the game with 4:34 left. Finally, with 2:23 to go, Nelson completed her hat trick as the Hawks held off a late Dolphin rally.
Becker sophomore goalkeeper Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Kents Hill) finished the day with nine saves to secure the victory. Mount Saint Vincent sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Marinese (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Walter Panas) recorded six stops. The Hawks outshot the Dolphins, 30-21.
The Hawks of Becker are back on the field on Sunday when they travel to Florida for Spring break week. They'll host Curry College at 7:30 p.m. The Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent play next at the Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts at 4:00 p.m.
