2019 Women’s Lacrosse Season Preview

WLAX Preview

LEICESTER, Mass. ---- The Becker College women's lacrosse program is looking to take a big step forward this season under second-year head coach Ashley Mossey.

"This season looks incredibly promising." Mossey commented. "Last year we solidified our standards of what we want in ourselves and our game play. We are still a young team but we have some great captains and upper classmen that are ready to battle. Our season goals are to be stronger offensively and work better in the midfield."

Senior goalkeeper Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Kents Hill) will backstop the Becker defense. Storey, a team-captain, was voted New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) All-Conference Second Team last season, the second time she has been so recognized. Storey enters her fourth season as Becker's starting keeper, and has already set the school record in career saves with 467.

"We are lucky to be returning our starting goalie Nikolle Storey who is the core of our defense." Mossey gushed about her starting keeper.

Junior midfielder Samantha Carter (Boothbay Harbor, Maine / Boothbay Region) will serve as Becker's other team captain and will lead the field players. Carter posted 22 goals and four assists last season, with a team-high 47 ground balls.

"[Storey] and [Carter] were voted by their teammates to be team captains for the 2019 season because they both demonstrated a team first attitude and embody our core values." Mossey said.

Junior midfielder Cassandra Nelson (Exeter, N.H. / Exeter) looks to be the focus of the offense, as she posted a team-high 27 goals with six assists, 43 draw controls and 38 ground balls last season. In just two seasons, the junior amassed 46 career goals with 13 assists.

Becker welcomes an impressive incoming freshman class of seven first-year players, highlighted by promising freshmen attackers Shannon Siclari (West Haven, Conn. / West Haven) and Briana Lancia (Cheshire, Mass. / Hoosac Valley).

"[Siclari] has a quick step and is shifty." Mossey added. "Another newcomer is [Lancia] who brings a force on offensive with while setting up others for success."

Other top newcomers include sophomore attacker Arianna Calouro (East Providence, R.I. / East Providence), freshman attackers Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass. / Billerica Memorial) and Julia Ravenelle (Barrington, N.H. / Oyster River) and freshman defender Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury).

"Calouro brings a spark to light up the field and put the ball in the back of the net. Conway and Ravenelle both bring an aggressive and assertive style of play to set the tone of how we want our offense to run. Kelly brings speed and aggressive defense to help with our d-unit."

With accomplished returners and a deep, talented recruiting class, Becker is poised to be one of the most improved teams in the region this year.

"We are coming off a tough wins and loss record from last season but that does not define this program and the work that we have and are putting in now." Mossey vowed. "We should not be underestimated and are looking forward to some great competitive games."

The Hawks will open their season on Wednesday, March 6, when they play host to the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph in a 4:00 p.m. game.
