LEICESTER, MASS. – The Becker College women's soccer team defeated Mass. Maritime 7-0 in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Becker got on the board 12:28 into the game when Jodi Theriault (Woodstock, Conn.) scored on a shot from 30 yards out, giving the Hawks a 1-0 advantage. The Hawks added to their lead in the 22nd minute when Theriault ripped a corner kick; that caused Mass. Maritime goalie Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) to fall into her net for an own goal. Becker increased their advantage to 3-0 when Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) fed Theriault for her second goal of the game. In the 36th minute Plunkett put the Hawks in front 4-0 when she headed a corner kick from Theriault into the back of the net. Sophomore Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass.) added a goal with 38 seconds remaining in the first half, giving the Hawks a commanding 5-0 lead.
Plunkett and Dery each added another goal in the second half, giving the Hawks an impressive 7-0 victory.
Becker goalie Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) didn't face any shots on the afternoon, earning her first collegiate shutout. The win lifts the Hawks record to 2-1 on the season. Becker will aim for their first winning streak of the season when they host Fitchburg State on Tuesday, September 11th at 4pm.
Mass. Maritime goalie Katie Levesque stood tall in net for the Buccaneers, making 17 saves. The loss drops Mass. Maritime to 0-1 on the season. The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, September 8th when they travel to Lesley University at 1pm.
