Teixeira's Hat Trick Pushes Hawks Past AMCATS 4-2

LEICESTER, Mass. - Hawks senior Kyra Teixeira (Old Lyme, Conn.) netted her second career hat trick on Saturday afternoon, leading the Becker Hawks to a 4-2 win over the Anna Maria AMCATS at Alumni Field.

Teixeira scored the first of her three in the 13th minute thanks to a perfectly weighted through ball by sophomore Alana Garofalo (Berlin, Conn.). The pass split the center backs of Anna Maria and was finished into the far-side netting by Teixeira for a 1-0 lead.

About five minutes later, Teixeira was the beneficiary of a fortunate crossing attempt that flew over the AMCATS goalie's head and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Anna Maria struck back in the 30th minute off a corner kick. A flicked header by junior Hannah Zajchowski (Palmer, Mass.) found the feet of sophomore Ashley Rufo (Pittsfield, Mass.), who's shot from the top of the box worked it's way through a maze of defenders and into the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Hawks took back their two-goal lead in the 37th minute on an odd-women rush that developed into a 2-on-1. Teixeira was the assister on this occasion with a perfectly timed pass to junior Shannon Kelley (Bellingham, Mass.), who broke in on goal alone and scored, giving Becker a 3-1 lead.

Teixeira finished off her hat trick in the 71st minute. With the help of a cross by Kelley, the near-post run and shot by Teixeira found the top corner for a 4-1 advantage.

Anna Maria would get a late goal on a penalty kick by sophomore Keannah Dunsmore (Georgia, Vt.) in the 85th minute to pull the score to 4-2.

Hawks sophomore Lyndsey Cobb-Wilkins (Elmira, N.Y.) got the start for Becker, playing the first half and picking up the victory with one goal against and two saves. Freshman Olivia Sherwood (Southington, Conn.) played the second half in goal for the Hawks, allowing a goal to go with a pair of stops.

AMCATS sophomore Rachel Matloff (Grafton, Mass.) allowed four goals for Anna Maria with six saves in the full, 90-minute effort.

Becker improves to 1-0 this season and has won their last five Opening Day matches. The AMCATS fall to 0-1 with the loss.

The Hawk women have a quick turnaround as they travel just down the road to Clark University for a noon kickoff on Sunday. The AMCATS return to action on Tuesday night as they host Northern Vermont - Johnson State at 7:00 p.m.
