LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team lost two matches at their Tri-Match on Saturday at the Leicester Gymnasium, falling in four sets to visiting University of Maine-Presque Isle, 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20, before coming up short in a five-set thriller to visiting Albertus Magnus College, 22-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15, 15-13.
The Hawks of Becker (3-6) faced the Owls of Maine-Presque Isle (4-6) in the opener. After dropping the first two sets, Becker bounced back to take the third before coming up short in four. Three of the sets were within five points or fewer. Becker junior middle blocker Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J. / Bronx) had an outstanding performance with 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional) tallied a team-high seven service aces and produced 15 digs on defense. Senior setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) set the table with 30 set assists along with ten digs.
Presque Isle freshman outside hitter Miranda Washinawatok (Shawano, WI) recorded a match-high 16 kills while freshman outside hitter Taylor Johnson (Eagle, ID) had 15 kills and eight digs.
Presque Isle faced the Falcons of Albertus Magnus (7-4) in the second match of the day. After the Falcons took the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-20, the Owls rallied with a stunning 32-30 upset in the third set. Albertus Magnus closed out the match with a 25-11 victory in the fourth set.
The Falcons were led by freshman right side Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn. / Platt) with 17 kills, seven service aces and 27 digs. Sophomore Delaney Ruiz (Meriden, Conn. / H.C. Wilcox Tech) added ten kills, ten digs and four aces.
For the Owls, freshman outside hitter Maddi Thweatt (Middleton, ID) finished with ten kills and 11 digs.
In the finale, the Hawks faced off against the Falcons, and nearly pulled off the upset with wins in the first and third sets. In the fifth set, Becker took a 13-11 lead and was two points from the win the Albertus Magnus rallied with four straight points to take the victory. Cora Luquis led the visitors with 16 kills and 13 digs Senior middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn. / James Hillhouse) tallied eight fills and five service aces, while Ruiz added ten kills and 12 digs.
Dupree once again led the Hawks with 14 kills, three aces and three blocks. Cullina posted a match-high 28 digs while sophomore outside hitter Gillian Criddle (Earleville, Md. / Bohemia Manor) came up with nine kills.
Becker is back on the court on Tuesday when they play host to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 6:00 p.m. Albertus Magnus hosts Dean on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. while Maine-Presque Isle travels to Husson on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
