Women’s Volleyball Begins NECC Tournament Play on Tuesday

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Becker College women's volleyball team has earned a fifth seed in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's volleyball tournament, as announced by the league this past weekend.

 

The women's volleyball team completed the regular season at 12-11 and 5-4 in the NECC under the direction of second-year head coach Hugo Ortega. Becker currently leads the conference in digs per set with 23.57, behind freshman Joanna Bampi's (Peabody, Mass.) 6.00 per set in league play. Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn.) is close behind with 356 total digs, and also leads the team in service aces with 44. Becker's attack is led by Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) who has a team-high 168 kills on the season. Gillian Criddle (Earleville, Md.) follows with 139 kills with a team-high .204 hitting percentage.

 

Eastern Nazarene took the top seed in the tournament finishing the season at 8-1 in conference play, earning the top seed by virtue of a tiebreaker with Elms College (Eastern Nazarene defeated Elms in head-to-head competition). The Lions led the conference in kills per set (11.58) and assists per set (10.58) during the regular season.

 

The tournament begins on Tuesday (Oct. 30) with the 1-2-3-4 seeds hosting the 8-7-6-5 seeds, respectively. The winners of the first round games will move on to semifinal play on Friday (Nov. 2). The winners of the semifinal games will then face off in the NECC Championship on Sunday (Nov. 4), at the highest remaining seed.  The schedule is as follows:

Game 2: #7 Dean (2-7) at #2 Elms (8-1) – 7:00 p.m.

Game 3: #6 Bay Path (3-6) at #3 Southern Vermont (7-2) – 7:00 p.m.

Game 4: #5 Becker (5-4) at #4 New England College (7-2) – 7:00 p.m.
